Drawing on years of helping families and businesses relocate with confidence, I share simple strategies that save you time, protect your belongings, and keep the process organized from start to finish.

Step 1 – Set a weight limit Aim for no more than 50 lbs (23 kg) per box. For many people, 35–40 lbs is even better. This keeps boxes safe to lift without straining your back or risking a drop.

Step 2 – Use the right size box Put heavy items like books, dishes, or tools in small boxes. Save large boxes for lighter, bulky items like bedding, pillows, or clothing. This prevents one box from becoming unmanageable.

Step 3 – Mix heavy and light items If you must pack something heavy, balance it out with lighter items in the same box. For example, put a layer of books on the bottom, then fill the rest with towels or linens.

Step 4 – Test before sealing Before you zip a box shut, lift it. If it feels too heavy, remove a few items and redistribute them. It’s easier to adjust now than on moving day.

Step 5 – Label for weight Mark boxes that are “HEAVY” so you or your movers know to use extra care. This also helps with stacking — heavier boxes should go on the bottom.
